Red ear sliders live all over the world. They have been introduced in places that freeze to places that are tropical. They thrive in Texas weather so if you keep him outside he should be fine. Just make sure he has a place to get out of the sun when he wants to. Plastic pond liner might not work because turtles have long claws. I would use a molded plastic pond from HD or Lowes. I have even used kiddie swimming pools. It's kind of late in the year to find one. Also, keep in mind that turtles can climb so what ever you use to fence him in make sure he won't escape.

The way Ace did his was really cool and definately save on all the back pain of diggin and hammering rock out. He used landscaping timbers piled up and ran the pond plastic liner down and into it. Very nice, maybe he can post some pics for you.

Don't they eat fish? You'll want something like mosquito fish in the pond to make sure its not the neighborhood breeding ground for mosquitos. If the turtle eats them, then you have no mosquito control. Old Salty or Triggerman would be a good person to talk to about that.

Don't mosquitos need still water to lay their eggs? Would having a fountain help?

The setups at the dome are also built up ponds. rail road ties stacked up about 3' high with pond liner laid inside. the water level stops about 1' from the top and that prevents the turtles from climbing out. They used very large rock slabs to build an island in the middle fro them to bask upon. One end has a large pond liner but instead is full of cat tails and lillies. the pond pump dumps the water acrossed the plants so that they can help as natural filters. A couple of nice catfish and thousands of those little mosquito fish finish it off. Word is don't feed goldfish as feeders as their overly fatty and oily tissue will cause liver damage in most pets.
