Halides for growth, VHO's (actinic) for color.

Many people believe that Halides are best for growth, but you can get terrific growth out of just VHO as well. I've got a VHO only 45 gallon tank, and I absolutely cannot keep up with the Calcium demand. I add 50-60 ml of B-Ionic daily as well as top off with Kalkwasser and my Calcium level is still usually around 360-380, and dKH of 9.0. Actually, I will probably be selling off all my SPS/Clams in the near future as they just suck too much Calcium, and I'd like to get back to LPS/Softies.

All that being said, I do think that Halides are probably the most EFFICIENT way to light your tank. You get more PAR for your buck, and don't need to replace lamps as often. Also, glitter lines are very pretty as well. In a 125, you'll want to stay efficent to keep costs in check, which meens VHO will probably be too expensive to be realistic.

Of course, VHO + Halides are the best as others have pointed out, but I felt I had to say that you can get great growth from VHO's as well.

Hey I agree that you can do wonders without Halides. I originally had 6 over driven t12's (coralife 12-20k's) on my 75g and I thought that my results were excellent. Now that I've gone to 500w MH and 200w PC I think my tank is getting to technical and thiings don't look as good. Should turn around soon. A friend has a nice 40g with SPS under 200w PC.

My vote, 3 250w MH 10-14k for growth and a couple of PC or T5 actinics for color.
