Yes it can be done. The waikiki aquarium in Hawaii has several outdoor reef and Fish only systems. Hawaii temps are very stable, as they are in the tropics. In Texas, temperature extremes and fluctuations would be a nightmare to control. It could be done, just "very" expensive
I have read that about Hawaii. That many of the best cichlid breeders keep their tanks outside.
I'd think TX would be a stretch for both summer and winter.

I wonder what the temperature a couple of feet underground is here.
Running the water through about 20 feet of pvc zigzaging back and forth underground might stabilize things some.
Too bad you can't use copper.
