Actually, I am looking forward to meeting someday, Larry. Gary has told me lot of good things about you. 8)

I don't think I could confuse Gary with anybody. He's a one in a million kind of guy! ^_^

If Gary lived in China it might be a different story. There are a billion people over there. So, even if he was a one in a million kind of guy, there would be a thousand others just like him!

Yes it does. I also use panty hose at the end of one tank overflow pipe to keep it from splashing in the sump and have used it to run the water down from skimmer out flow pipes too. Keeps the splash down and drops the noise level way back.

I've got the Copperband gang here!

Pantyhose is much cheaper than those overpriced mesh bags the LFS sells and works just fine.

Louie3 - make sure you get new panty hose, not mom's. New has less soap from washing and should not have body lotion on them. Then all you have to do is rinse them off good in warm water and they are ready to use. Cheaper also means disposable when they get dirty and the mesh bags from the LFS are something you will want to wash and that's more trouble than its worth sometimes. Still, if your application calls for a heavy weight bag, the mesh ones are better.

I get a good three to four used per leg due to how much strech there is in them, I use them for chemical filtration (usually carbon in my sump).

The other advantage of using a filter on your drain line into the sump is that it cuts down on bubbles. The bubbles won't make it through the filter and just come out the top of the filter. I use a polypropylene filter on my tanks, but the idea is the same. I have used the panty hose thing in the past. Actaully knee hi hose are about the perfect size if you are buying them new.

Polypropylene also has a smaller pore size so it catches more trash. For media filtration like carbon of phosphate absorber, the hose works just fine, especially if put in a high flow area like a chemical tray or where the drain line enters a sump. I have also used it in place of the more expensive disposable filters that are used in nano tanks and HOB filters.
