RE: looking for another collie
Richard,
"Backyard breeders" are defined as people who just throw 2 dogs together, regardless of faults, pedigree, etc. The sire and dam aren't checked for typical problems like hip displasia. The sire and dam should have OFA/CERF certifications. There are many, many breeders who have very small operations - they only have a few dogs that they show/keep. They are just fine. People who breed show dogs generally have what they call "pet quality" puppies for sale. There's nothing wrong with these dogs - they have minor faults that you would never see - and aren't anywhere near as "bad" as those from backyard breeders. The also offer guarantees. They typically don't charge any or much more than a typical backyard breeder. Oh, and "AKC papers" don't mean the puppy is a good puppy.
