if you are considering trying to get a pump to return the exact same amount as a straight siphon it will be a dissaster waiting to happen, that is , if you could ever even get it to the point of being workable at all. you will deffinately need an overflow of some sort, to regulate how much water can enter the siphon. also, a siphon break, so that you don't have a spill in the event of a power outage. if you already have an overflow set up, then any of the filters listed would return enough, as long as it was clean, and was performing at it's best.

    Gallons X (60/minutes) = gph

    Hope that helps.

    5 gal. X (60/4 min.) = 5 X 15 = 75 gph

    So you were correct.

Just remember that on canister filters the advertised flow rate is at zero head pressure with no media in the canister. For exampe the filstar xp3 is advertised at 350 gph but with the media baskets in the flow rate is 180 gph at zero head. They have that info on the side of the box.

be sure to have the return sectioned off to limit the return volume to your tank if your siphon breaks or the powerfilter fails.
