Did something stupid

My sallnity is 1.028 right now, because I added some salt water without removing some. It made a pretty big jump from 1.025.

I have some live rock, hermits, snails, and other small things. The tank seems fine because I did it Saturday night and went to the meeting yesterday. Nothing is dead and well although it seemed "slow" last night it livened up a TON last night once the lights went out.

Should I fix it or let it manage itself when I do my weekly water changes?

Bring it down slowly with small water changes. Take out some SW and replace it with RO/DI. High salinity really messes up your fish's kidneys. I would start as soon as possible. 1.028 is not super high, but I wouldn't leave it there. Fixing it all at one time is not what I would recommend. That would be to sudden of a change and will stress your fish even more then what they are already being stressed by the high salinity.

your salinity should not increase under those circumstances unless the new salt water was very high salinity or you have been using salt water for top-off water. was that it?
you should not have much trouble at 1.028. i would bring it down slowly with water changes. but watch that it does not get much higher.

I have no fish in the tank but some polyps... that seem dead, but we will see.

The sallnity went up because in an effort to liven up my reef I got some sand from someone in this group. I poured the sand in alond with all the water.

The tank is MUCH more alive than it was and all the critters seem happy. It did slow down some during the day but at night it was hopping.

Just did not want to learn in the "background" it was killing everything.

I will remove it slowly.

OK, that sounds good. The sand contains stuff that will be sensitive to rapid changes in salinity too, especially pods and microstars.
