We are all growing older and hopefully wiser. I always find it a bad idea to make fun of a time era especially if you were not there. People will always be the same regardless of the year or clothing fashions. We all have families and people that love us regardless of our age. The only thing I find unsettling about our culture is our steady departure from God. Just look around and you can see how we have drifted away. Look at society when we first took prayer out of schools and look at it now. I am not talking about technology, I am talking about people, more crime, more pregnancies out of marriage, more divorces, and you can even lose your job these days if you just talk about God at the workplace. It seems like freedom of religion and free speech is going away. :(

Thunderkat we may need to start another thread on this altogether. This is bound to start a HUGE discussion and take us way off the topic of baby boomers. I think it is good to have discussion on religion, but perhaps in a thread dedicated to it alone.

There are a lot of finacial implications of the Largest generation passing on. There are not enough people in the upcoming generations to support the business and real estate market once this demographic passes on......any comments?
I do think in the short term (over the next 30 years or so) there will be a huge demand for jobs in healthcare. As people get older they tend to have more health problems, so obviously there will be more demand for various drugs, treatments, rehab, home health care, etc. This creates a good opportunity for the younger crowd just out of college. However, many people are taking better care of themselves than generations past and living longer lives. I think that the baby boomers generation will not pass as quickly as those prior given this fact. That is, there will be a more gradual decline in the population instead of most people dying by around 80.

I don't think the loss of the baby boomers will be catastrophic to the economy. I am sure it will make a large impact, but I don't think everything will fall apart. With the passing years come new inventions and gadgets. Those jobs will need to be filled by the new generations. For instance, look at how many computer geeks we have now (my husband included). I bet back in the 60s and before this was unfathomable.

Baby Boomers are already starting to retire. Many will keep funds in the stock market and live off the interest. As I said before, there will most likely be a large impact for a short amount of time, but I don't think everything will turn into chaos. I mean they aren't all going to drop dead at once. :huh

My family are freaks...both my great grandmothers lived to be 98 and my grandmothers are now 93. My mother should live to at least that or beyond given the statistics. I plan to live to 103! I figure if they can live that long eating bacon grease, I've got a great shot! My grandmother said something that made me giggle: "If you live long enough, you get to be pretty old."

I'm not sure living for a long time is that great. On one hand, one sees a lot of changes happen and several generations of their famiy. On the other hand, one tends to suffer the loss of many friends and family members. It's a double edged sword. ---but I digress. ;)
