    Default Tank volume discrepancy

Hey. I now have a 60x18x20 tank, which everyone has referred to as 100 gallons. I even came across a TOTM saying it is 100 gals (http://www.thereeftank.com/totm/apr03.htm). But if you multiply LxWxH / 231, you get 93.5 gals. Am I missing something? Or is it just a weird size with a weird volume?

Manufacturers just round to the nearest nice sounding gallons, always rounding up of course. For actual water volume use the inside measurements/231.

I think most manufacturers round their sizes off. when you think about it, volume as measured in gallons is also dependent on the user. how many gallons does your sand bed displace, how about your live rock?
"Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean ? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind." ~ Jack Handey

That is kinda what I was figuring. I'll go with the calculation (93.5 total gallons). Thanks.

I get 84.6 gallons assuming it is 1/2" glass. (59*17*19.5)/231

    60 x 18 x 21 is 100 / My 75 oceanic is 48 x 18 x 21

I did inside measurements on the W and H; the L was over 60 since I was measuring in the rim area. So, another oddity: I believe its inside measurements are as I stated before (60x18x20). However, I will school off of you, and take another set of extra-careful measurements tonight.

You're right; a 100 gallon is really about 92 gallons. Whatever happened to truth in advertising?

dunno. And Richard's correct as well: the inner measurements are even shorter due to glass thickness. So, not only is it not 100 gals, it is not 93.5 either: I "lost" 5 more gallons: it is actually 88.5 gals. Sheesh.

now that you have done that, calculate the sand and rock displacement and then you will really be mad... :wacko
