Thread: upgrade information

    Default upgrade information

I recently started a 10gal nano and my husband just bought me a 24gal nano. I was wondering...If I cycle the tank with live sand from the 10gal...will it kill off anything that might already be in the sand?
Thanks for any advice given. It helps alot.

Helping a new sand bed along with an innoculum of live sand from an established tank is an established practice. if the sand from the 10 gal. is pretty new I don't know if you will accomplish much. At most, I would just take a cup full of sand and add it to the new tank.

I was going to use the sandbed from the 10gal and use it for the 24gal. I just didnt want to kill anything in it if I cycled it.

Kinda depends on how old the sandbed is and how "alive" it is. In a 10g, I doubt the content of the SB is all that useful. If it smells like rotten eggs when you dig it out, don't re-use.

Best approach is probably as Gary suggested, use new sand but seed it with a cup or two from the old tank. Priairily this will give the bacteria growth a head start.
