Thread: Detritus?

  1. #1

    Default Detritus?

Ok...not to be stupid...BUT.... Is the ash-y stuff on my rocks detritus? If I blow it off won't it just settle there again? I don't have a vacuum with a small enough mouth to get in the crevices. Right now, I am stirring it up with my power heads and doing a water change. However, it doesn't really make a dent in the volume. I thought my coraline algae was dying, but I think it just has a dusting of this stuff. :unsure

Forgot to add....Will my skimmer take it out, or do I need to add a filter for a while too?

Your skimmer will pull some of it out but you can use a mechanical filter too. Eventually your rock will quit shedding so much detritus.

How long does this usually take? I've had the tank set up since Oct. Will more water changes speed things along?

Oh...on a side note, I am stopping by CB tomorrow to pick up your "miracle food". ^_^

Not really. You could just increase the current to help keep the detritus moving around. That way it will breakdown into smaller and smaller pieces and your skimmer will pick it up.

Do you have a sump on this tank?
