    Default Niger Trigger

Don't know if this is a big deal. My new Niger has startied laying down in the corners of my tank. I've only had it for two weeks. He just started this Tuesday. It will do this for 5-30min. at a time. Then he's up and swimming around, like nothing is wrong. He eats very good. All test on water are good. I did some reading on this and seems somewhat normal. Just thought i'd ask and see what you thought about this.

You have me on this one.

Try dropping a PM to Triggerman, Don in SA, or Richard. They are all guys I would bounce a question like this off of.

I don't really know if it is a problem or not based on the info given. Triggers can just be "goofy" sometimes.

Your not leaving your lights on 24/7 are you?

My Niger, takes time outs thru out the day, he will disappear into the rock work for a while, lock himself into place with his trigger and rest.., then he goes back on patrol... i'd say your trigger is doing somthing close to that.

When I had Nigers in the past they loved to move the sand out from under a section of rocks and lay under them on their sides. Maybe he's just searching out his territory still.

No problem with that. Probably sounded like a stupid question but with my job I've learned to ask them.

As long as he keeps eating well and doesn't show any other signs of problems I wouldn't worry about it. It's real easy to get into trouble trying to "fix" a fish when you don't know exactly what your trying to fix or if there is even a problem.

I have a puffer at the store that spends it's time playing with a gorilla crab I threw in the tank and the rest of the time taking a nap in the corner of the tank. People always think it's dead when it does that. Why it won't just eat the crab I don't know. Just likes tormenting the thing I guess.

Richard, I have seen burrfish (Spiny Puffers - Chilomycterus schoepfi) in the wild do the same thing with crabs. We had 4 or 5 that hung out around our dock and they would chase a crab down, toy with it for a while and then drop it and move on. They would repeat this behavior over and over until some lucky crab would be invited to dinner. I picked up a half eaten crab (stealing it for bait - ) and viola! it had recently molted. I doubt they would really have a problem wreaking havoc on a hard crab, that beak is pretty formidable. I have seen them make short work of an overturned moon snail, breaking the shell back at the opening to get to the creamy center. I think that they just prefer the soft shelled crab over the other items on the menu.

And as far as the napping in the corner goes....who doesn't like to have a snack, kick back against a recliner, look atht eh critters on the other side of the glass and take a little power nap
