Thread: ozone reactor

Trying to answer a few of the questions above ...
Dryer - really isn't very practical here in S.Texas, humid air will require you change the dryer media every few days. The ozonator will be more efficient with dryer air, but the general approach is to buy a higher output unit than needed, no dryer, and let it run longer to reach the ORP target.

I just soak my probe in Vinegar (hot vinegar) for a minute or so. Leaving a second one soaking a long time wouldn't be a good idea IMO. Doesn't take long to clean, and a 2nd one will cost a good bit of $$s.

If you smell ozone it is either 1) escaping from the skimmer, or 2) getting into the sump water and escaping from there
    1) is bad for your health & will oxidize stuff in the room quickly - add some dry carbon where air is exiting the skimmer cup
    2) Can have serious health impact on your fish & corals - run carbon in the skimmer drain to the sump.

I have dry carbon on top of my skimmer cup, no carbon in the sump because I have a VERY long linear travel of water (slow moving) before it reaches the return pump.

    Hope some of this helps?

Steve, so you just put carbon in a bag, and sit it on top of the collection cup?

    thanks

Thanks for the info on cleaning the probe. I thought it was something simple, but I didn't want to take a chance on ruining the probe.
On my system I inject the ozone into the protein skimmer and I have a remote collection canister that has a small container on top to hold carbon. I think you could do this with most skimmers by drilling a hole in the collection cup cover and glueing in a piece of PVC pipe and put a PVC cap on it with a couple of holes drilled into it. This way the air from your skimmer gets vented thru the carbon.

In the SPS threads on reef central the guys are cleaning their probes weekly. I just ordered all new probes for my Aquacontroller II. I did not keep up on cleaning the first probes and they all failed in about 6 months time. So from now on I am going to clean all probes every weekend when I clean my skimmer.

OK...I just got the ozone reactor but I do not have my new ORP probe yet. :angry
So what should I do? Put it on a timer? For how long? It says it does 200mg/hr.

Just turn in on 24/7 very low (15%) and ratchet it up over the next couple of weeks very slowly.....IMO My .02
I am currently running my 200g 24/7 at about 75%, never have turned in to 100%.
ORP runs around 300 right now.

Agreed, start it slow - you should anyway even if you had your ORP probe. I cranked mine up over a 2-week period. Now running my 200mg at 100% and it runs 24/7 - ORP target is 350 and it runs at about 320 usually. That's on a ~500g system.

I am thinking about buying one for my 125. What is a good one to get for my sized tank?
