Does stainless steel give off any toxins? I'll be using it in one of my hoods and did not want it to harm my tank.

Not that I know of but depending on what quality it is, stainless steel will still oxidize....

When you say that you are using it in your hood, what are you using it for (screws, clamps, etc...)? There is normally a good non-metal subsitute for many things. Elaborate a bit so we can give you some ideas,!

installing 2-18w pc lights into my 6gal. elcipse hood. i need to install a backup plate so the lights can have something to screw into. I didn't want rivets/screws to be exposed on the out side of hood. I have all kinds of sheet metal at my shop and thought that stainless would work.
Stainless would be fine, just as long as it's not in your tank.

Also look into getting your hood clear-coated. I will prevent oxidation and will make the salt creep easy to wipe off. There is a place over by the airport that will do it for you pretty cheap.

or look into possibly a spray-on clear coat at home depot.

I just used an aluminum square rod from HD and mounted my lighting to that.
Sounds like it would be fine, I would go with aluminum if you have some too.
I think i'll use some aluminum. just thought i'd ask befor trying stainless.
