    Default Chiller

I need a chiller for a 180. I limited on space and had thoughts of putting it in the attic, is this a bad idea.

    Thanks

I think it would have to work extra hard up there in the summer. Some things to take into account would be......

Install a thermostatically controlled attic fan. (We all should do that anyway.) Remember, a lot of heat up there.

Take into account the head pressure on the pump to get the water flow needed.

Triple check all connections for leaks. Install a big pan of some sort under the unit to catch any leaks. Water leaks coming down through the attic will be much worse than on the floor or outside. A leak in the attic has a good chance of coming in contact with electricity. Junction boxes, outlets, lights. both in the ceiling or the walls. And drywall acts like a sponge when in contact with water.

I have read of people putting their chillers outside. This may be another option.

I checked with a few chiller mfgs on this when I was buying my 1HP. I forget the term they used (Thermal something?), but basically at about 95 DegF the chiller becomes VERY inefficient. I have my chiller on a shelf with the back end pointed out the window, kinda like a window AC unit.

I remember reading a post on here or RC about someone thinking about putting a chiller in the attic. Bascially from what I have heard it's not too good of a idea. The heat up there would dramatically reduce the capability of the unit and could cause it to 'overload' itself. If you think about a central air unit in a house, the compressor/cooling units are located outside rather than up in the attic......
