Upgrading Skimmer

Well it's time to upgrade my skimmer. I currently have an MRC2 skimmer powered by a MAG12 which has been doing good but now with all the additions to the tank I really need to upgrade skimmers.

The tank is a 380 gallon tank with a small 40 gallon sump I have some large fish in there that eat like pigs, therefore I need something powerful. I want to stay away from becket skimmers since my electricity bill is already high as it is. I've been hearing good things about the needle wheel skimmers such as the TurboFlotor and the ASM skimmers, but wanted to see what you guys with large tanks were running. I would like to stay under $500 but have something that I could use down the road, when I get a bigger tank.

PM Chris (captexas) and ask him how his is doing. He's running one of the new recirculating Euroreefs. I'm quite sure that it is going to be over the $500 though.

Don't know if you've seen when I've posted this site before but I really like it because it gives the ASM rating and then what they would rate it for. The G5 that ASM rates for 700 gallons they rate at 400 and that one is going for 489.99 with pumps. Not sure, but you could check with Pete about making something like these and you just buy the pumps. Good luck on the search, and finding the skimmer that you want.

I haven't gotten my tank up and running yet so my Euroreef 12-2 recirculating skimmer is just collecting dust for now. They've made some changes (pumps, etc.) to them and of course jacked up their prices as well so a ER skimmer for your tank would be like $1500. The ASM skimmers are similar in design and sell for much less so I would check them out. Steve (NaCl) loves his monster Turbo Floater so you might check his out if you have a chance as well.
