Thread: FW feeders?

    Default FW feeders?

I'm back in saltwater after a 5 or 6 year hiatus. Been keeping and breeding cichlids and other FW fish in the meantime. Anyway, I have a 75 with mostly predators including a small volitan lion, orange oyster dog, and an arc-eye hawk... Anyway, they are eating frozen krill and shrimp, ghost shrimp, and I've been feeding them some cichlid juvies from my large producers (South Americans-300+ in a spawn). I was just wondering if their nutritional value was comparable to marine fish like silversides. Mind you, the live ones are occasional treats-I've seen too many spoiled fish working in the business to feed only live unless I have to. What about feeding mollies? WOuld raising them in FW or SW make any difference?

Shouldn't make any difference. Fish are fish. I don't think there is any nutritional difference between freshwater and saltwater fish. It is all about what they eat. The further up the food chain, the less nutrients in the food.

Cichlids are closer to SW fish than just about anything else, especially south americans. I assume you raise them in a bit saltier environment than just str8 freshwater since they like to spawn with the addition of salt.

Definately not true. FW dont have the same fatty acids and are actually BAD to feed saltwater fish. Im trying to find some articles on it right now so I can give you the full science.
