Ozone Generator set up and control parameters.

Folks,

I am interested in knowing how everyone has there Ozone units set up.
The instructions with the unit do not say anything about usage....

I have a new adjustable 200g Aquamedic unit.
I will also be controlling it with my Neptune Aquacontroller and lab grade ORP probe.
It will be on my 215 with about 350 gallons water total.

What I am interested is start up sequence, times, levels, shufoff limits, etc.

your help is appreciated.

Mike, here is how I started up ... I have the 200mg/hr RedSea AquaZone plus unit (Has ORP meter)

Initially I set the mg/hr to 125 and ORP shutoff at 200, it took about 5-7 days to reach that level, then I cranked it up to (mg/ORP) 150/250, 150/275, 175/300, 200/325, and 200/350 over the next 3-4 weeks. Now it is set at Max mg/hr (about 220) and ORP set point of 350. Ozone is injected into the skimmer via the OceanRunner venturi - air suction from the venturi is all I use - No air pump into the ozone generator. Air source to the ozone generator comes from outside air.

I am not using an air dryer, and it runs 24x7. My ORP has never gotten above about 320, and I clean the ORP meter with vinegar about once every week or two, Todd will tell you to clean it once a week.

I am not running Charcoal at the outlet from the skimmer, but I have a LOT of sump space that the water travels through before it reaches the return pump. I DO have a charcoal canister on top of the skimmer because I could smell the ozone when I first started - the charcoal eliminated the ozone smell completely.

Yea, that's what they (the mfg) suggest. Ozone is a strong oxidant (like chlorine) and residual ozone making it back into the tank can really harm your fish & corals.

I do run charcoal in my sump, but the return from the skimmer doesn't run directly through the charcoal.

Interesting to hear you had it shut off at 200 ORP at start up.........My ORP is 280-290 all the time........It would never turn on!!!!
I am going to shut off at 300 for a week, 310 second week, 325 third week, and 350 in a month..........that is my plans at this point.
Just cleaned the OPR probe, so should be in good shape.

I am pretty excited about the unit...........I have read a TON of good things about them!!

One more questions......what do you do if you don't have a port on yoru skimmer for the ozone?

Your skimmer has to be sucking air from somewhwere ... connect the output of the ozone generator to that air inlet!

I run mine for 14 hours per day. I run my unit at about 50mg/hr for a 300 total gallon system.

I now run carbon in my system every other week or so for 3-4 days. I don't run it on my skimmer's effluent.

I would like to get a "cap" for holding carbon on top of my skimmer's exit holes. Sounds like a potential for some of Pete's scrap after he builds some of those turbofloater knock off's!

PH and ORP fight each other...kind of. As PH goes up, ORP will go down. I run my ozone during the day when my lights are on. Be careful where your ph ends up during the night if you run the O3 24 hrs a day.
