i can tell you this right now. if you dotn live in town the deer will probvbaly eat your plants, unless you have a 8' fence :P id suggest to go to home depot or lowes, and get a pond book.

the filter gets clogges? or the pump gets clogged? if its getting clogged it could be because of suspended algae. is your pond green? ot prevent this get more plants,a nd a uv sterilizer if more plants dosent help. what is clogging teh filter?

I've made a few DIY filters, and they either don't work very well or they work too well and you always cleaning them. I have about 7,000 gallons in the back yard and I just use tons of plants and a surface skimmer (Savio) I bought here...

Good price and works great! Best piece of equipment I bought for the pond.

lots of plants always worked for me. in new ponds there is usually a cycling period were the water gets really green, but once all the nutrients are used up the algae dies, and falls to the bottom. it is important to have good aggitation at this point, because the decaying algae uses up the oxygen. as long as nutrients aren't being introduced(runoff, water change, dogs, kids)the water should stay pretty clear thereafter, assuming you do have enough plants to at least process the nutrients from fish waste.
