Chiller is saving my *****!

No pitch for a specific product here, but I have a Pacific Coast 1hp chiler.

Our AC has been out now for two days :o Well, they did "fix" it yesterday and the temp got back down from 85 to 78 by about 1:00am, then it quit again. 82 this morning, 92 in the house now :angry Still no service guy, but we are "next" :angry :angry :angry

Anyway, the chiler has kept my 700g system at a nice pleasant 79-80degF through this entire time, and I had the MHs on all day! Plus, the window AC in the fish room makes it a nice place to visit ;)

If you are thinking about buying a chiller ... everything I have would be dead by now!

THe same thing happened to me last month. My house was at 93 degrees and my tank was getting hot. I solved the problem by slowly dripping ice cold water but I wish I did have a chiller. I am definately thinking of buying one for future emergencies. THanks Steve, I will kiip the Pacific Coast chillers in mind.

Yup buy a chiller...over my vacation time my timer went out and lights were left on for 2 week and fried everything. My tank temp is at 92 and everything is now dead except the damsel...so hopefully ill be getting a chiller soon

Man, sorry to hear that Viet-tin. So your lights were on for two weeks? Do you think that would be enough to stress out your corals to death even if the temperature would have been normal? Why is it that damsels always survive everything. THey are like the coakroaches of the sea. With my new job I will not be home as much, I will definately be getting a chiller. Sorry to hijack your thread Steve.

I would get a 1/4 hp. That's what I used on my old 75 gallon.

where did you buy your chiller from. I have really been looking at the 1 hp pacific coast, and the best price I can find is from myreefcreations. How is the temp controller on it?

Something to think about - if you ever plan on upgrading tanks, a 1/4 hp is going to limit you (that is unless you want to have to buy another chiller when you upgrade). We had the 1/3 hp on our 75G, and it works quite well on the 210G also.

My concern is this.... How much do you spen on your tank inhabitants. God knows at some point you will start venturing into the expensive animals after giving yourself some confidence that you know what you are doing. At this point your equipment is the reason everything is going well. People keep telling me about the latest and cheapest chiller on the market. I say great but how long is it going to work for?.......No reply. When a house AC unit goes out it costs how much to replace!?!??!?!?!? OMFG!!! but why dont we go find the latest cheapest home AC??... kinda backwards..
I have used aqualogic chillers for YEARS... and although i am new to this forum i have used them at the Georgia aquarium, Monteray bay, all of the Texas Marine science institues in port-A and Corpus..... I have seen these units function for years!! And YES they are more expensive. But when your aqualogic takes a dump gues what???? they are made with standard AMERICAN AC components that can be replaced by most AC technicians.... so now how much is that worth???

My aqualogic 1/4hp is about 5 years old.. and i have seen them up to 10 before anything happens. I'll stick to that brand. cause now the only thing people have to competye with is price, and as far as i am concerned I LIKE QUALITY!!!!
