I would reverse the pumps. Why just pump water up and down to the sump. You don't need that much flow for your skimmer. Use your horsepower where it would do the most good, with the closed loop.

I've never seen a closed loop for anything except an SPS tank. A FOWLR doesn't really need a lot of flow.

I have a closed loop with an ampmaster 3k. My tank is drilled, but you can have a siphon tube over the side of the tank to feed the closed loop pump.
