Thread: Suggestions for chiller venting

    Default Suggestions for chiller venting

I recently got a 1/3 HP chiller for my 180 aquarium. I went up level on the chiller because I figured it would run less. I currently have it in a kitchen pantry, which is behind the tank. I have about a 1 sq ft hole cut in the wall to run the hoses, as well as to provide a means for venting hear. I am amazed at how much heat this thing produces.

Anyhow, to drive the vent hole, I tried using a large computer-type fan, which is about 6" across. It is rated at 85 CFM. However, it still seems to get to around 84 in the closet, when the ambient temp in the room is about 78. I'm not sure if that is too hot to run the chiller, but it would be nice to be able to keep it somewhat close to the room temperature in there.

Can anyone suggest a good fan for this application? Or tell my what would be a recommended max temp for a chiller?

    Thanks!

I'll answer my own question here. I got a cheap "cyclone" style fan from the home store, and it works great. It is about a foot in diameter, and it pulls enough air to keep the pantry the same as ambient temperature when the chiller is running.

One thing I noticed is that the cooling actually works better with the pantry door closed. The door has about a one inch gap at the bottom. My guess is that this causes a fast stream of air for cooling vs a more radiant type of cooling.
