Thread: A.R.T. Kalk Reactor

Tim/doc - I like the concept of this unit, but not sure how it would work with my system, and how you would conect it inline with a top-off system?

I have a HUGE evaporative topoff requirement (700g system) which I am topping off with 100% Kalk water currently and PH/dKH/Ca levels are barely being maintained.

I have a ReefFanatic top off controller that basicaly turns on a pump when the float switch triggers. If I understand this unit, it simply connects in-line with the RO/DI and water pressure causes it to mix & dose, and a simple Kent float switch in the sump would shut if off, right?

With my evaporative volume, I would be concerned that it would be active too long/often and would end up dosing a Kalk cloud.

Any thoughts on how I might be able to use one of these, or a bigger one?

What's the price target on these?

    Thx - Steve

You probably would not want to run it off, of the float switch. Those things are known to clog when used with Kalk. My solution is, a solinoid with 2 float switch if you are going to run it off a R.O system, or just connect it in-line with the top-off system of your choice.

As far as kalk getting to the top, with the model that Tim has with a whole bag in it, it didn't even get more than 3/4 of the way up. For a 700g, I would probably use a 3 footer, because the pump would be on for a little longer time in your system. Plus it would hold more saturated water for a tank that size. So when your top-off is dosing, it would push the saturated water out into your tank. Allowing for the new water to get saturated. Most small units will push all of there saturated water out, plus push alot of unsaturated water out as well. That happens because the evaporation requirment is greater that the volume of saturated water in the Kalk reactor. That is why I said 3 foot for your system, because I do not think that it would evaporate more water than that 3 footer can hold.(maybe) It would be real hard to get Kalk out of a 3 footer. How much evaporation does your tank go through about 3-4 gallons a day.

That's hard to say, I never really watch it enough to make an accurate estimate, but off hand I would say more like 8-10g a day?

So, if in-line with the RO/DI you suggest a solenoid to shut off the water flow, and connect the solenoid power to the top off controller ... hum, that might work?

Any suggestions for a source/model for this solenoid?

Can you please PM me with the price for a three footer? Of course I would get a "Beta Tester" discount, right

Yes, but instead of a controller, all you would have to use is a float swich to turn off, and on the solinoid, so you can let water from your R.O. pass through it.
That style is for if you are going to use it on a R.O filter. If you allready have a top-off, then like I said all you would have to do then is connect it in line, it is as simple as that.
Maybe we can jump up to a 4 footer, if you would like. I think that you would be happy with the 3 footer, though.

Well we are working on getting everybody their kalk reactors first, but we have started on a Calcium reactor. I will post some pics probably next week of the Calcium reactor. So you can see what it looks like.
