Thinking about trying a clam

I would like to try and keep a clam but dont have any experience with them. I also want to make sure I have an adequate set-up so that it will thrive. My tank is bare bottom 30g cube. I have mostly LPS and softies, 45# of live rock. Lighting is a 250w 20k metal halide with IceCap ballast. Skimmer is a modified seaclone100 (I know they suck). I am running a mag9.5 on a closed loop with a SCWD. My concern is if I should have a calcium or kalk reactor, or anything else. I would really like a maxima or something like that. I dose bionic alk. and calc. and maintian them at a good level. What, if anything, do I need. Thanks for the advice.

I would start with a Squamosa, they are very hardy, you do need to add calcium so the clam can grow..and feed DTs and such..you have the proper lighting..so, I would try..it should be fine.

I agree, sounds like you are set-up just fine.

As long as you have the water parameters for SPS, any clam should do fine. They actually like slightly higher nitrates and many frag farmers use them as a sort of biological filter. Smaller clams are mostly filter feeders. They get more photosynthetic as they grow. I'd suggest you go to a clams direct or on of the other good clam sites and do some research.

I have a Derasa( Mispelled I'm sure) All it has ever known is compact fluorescent. For the first year it didn't grow much. An expert(KK) told me my water was too clean! So I pulled my filter fluff out of my wet dry and in the last 6 months it has almost doubled in size. Good luck if I can do you can too.

Sounds like your system is well suited to keep a clam. I bought a crocea clam about a month ago and I have a 29g tank with 250w metal halide. When I bought it, it was not doing great but know it is thriving. Its zooanthellae has trippled and when from a dark purple/brown and a metallic blueish and greenish color. I dose B Ionic as well and every now and then I feed it phytoplankton. I am sure you will do just fine.
