    Default NewB

    Hello out there!!
Ok, so I'm new to the whole reef thing. I've had fish only tanks for several years, and now I want to turn my 55 gal into a reef tank. Right now I just have 2 penguin 330 filters on it and 2 powersweep powerheads. I also have a seaclone protien skimmer, but am having tons of trouble with it. My question is if anyone can give me any ideas on what knid of filtration would be better for a reef tank. I was thinking about a sump, but my tank isn't drilled for one, and my stand has a support beam in the middle, so there are 2 about 20 in sections. I really don't know much about what I am doing so if anyone can tell me anything at all I would so very much appreciate it!!!
    Thanks
    Jen

Lots of Live Rock and sand! Think about getting a sump and an overflow box.

I also use A Seaclone Skimmer and yes they arent great but they can be adjusted to do some good. I get about 3/4 cup of thick nastiness a week. The airtube for your skimmer should be closed all the way, and then open 1 1/2 turns. After an hour or so you should start to see foam.

See... the problem Im having is that when I open it I get some foam, but it also pours tons of tiny bubbles into my tank, but when I try to close it more for fewer bubbles, water starts overflowing from the collection cup. I don't ever get any "nastiness" its driving me crazy!!!!

Than put a pice of pantyhose on the overflow. I also just read that the more flow the more bubbles get pumped out. Try opening another have turn. If that doesnt work than raise the pump closer to the surface.

Sorry about the link. Go to Protien Skimmers, and then seaclone troubleshooting.

    Fishy,

a couple of our local members are acrylic fabricators and can build you a nice overflow box and sump/refugium. Dan even sells to most of the LFS's in the area. I would definately suggest either him or Pete, as they can customize the product to your needs and current stand and tank. Definately come by CB pets for some liverock, join maast first and you will save money at most of the LFS's.
