Default too many bubbles from overflow! help!

I have a hang on overflow on my tank since it isnt drilled. I recently changed my plumbing and return pump to circulate more water through my tank from the sump. First problem was extremly loud toilet flushing noise from overflow due to the increased water going through it. I instered some airline tubing into the overflow line and got rid of the noise but now I still have a problem. All the air that is traveling with the water in the drain line is causing problems with my skimmer and hardcore salt creep in my sump as the sump now is one big bubble factory. My baffles cant keep up with this either and lots of bubble in the main tank now thanks to this as well. My idea! I was thinking of putting a length of 3" pvc with a tee reduced to 1" for my overflow, a cap with a 1" line on the top, and notch the bottom of the PVC to let water out. This all sits in my sump, the line from the overflow ties into the tee, the 1" line from the top vents the air trapped, and the notches on the bottom allow the water to flow out. Will this fix my bubble problem? What if I cap the bottom as well and drill lots of small holes in the bottom of the pvc and fill this with rock rubble? That would help break up the bubbles and add some bio filtration as well? Would help oxygenate the tank water but am afraid it would be a nitrate factory like bio-balls? Anyone know if this will work?

Could be you need a durso standpipe, and they can be easily built for a hang-on overflow. Here's a diagram of ouw to buuild a Stockman Durso standpipe. I have one of these, and it works great. No bubbles, and no flushing noise.

Let me know if this helps.
