guitar ?
When you playing a tab and it has an "X" on the string, meaning mute, does that mean you strum the note you put you finger on the string but don't push it down?

RE: guitar ?
that can be tricky......if you are playing a D chord, should look something like this:
3
2
3
x
x
x
you dont play the first 3
but, there are some power chords:
x
x
x
3
x
1
you cant NOT hit that, so then it becomes a mute

so if i'm playing this, the x string gets played w/o a finger touching it?

no, you want to mute it with your index finger and play the two around it. if it was to be played, it would say
------
------
--11--
--0--
--9--
