Default Pump size for 46 gallon SPS tank

Well until I bought this house a few weeks ago I had planned on setting up a 75 gallon reef ready, but now I have no money because every little expense is killing me. So I'm going to move my current tank but set up a small temp tank in my garage while I get mine drilled...anyways I had a Mag 12 for the 75 and I was planning on selling it or sending it back, but I wanted to see if anybody thought I could use it on this tank. I'm going to have two drains on the tank with a 1 1/2" bulkheads and then one return. Is it safe to have that much flow in such a little tank? I was going to get a Mag 9.5 instead. Anybody need a Mag 12 or think I should just use it.

Id use it, Im using one on a closed loop and a lot more on my 60g.

I agree, I'd keep it and use it on the RR and even on the temp tank. You can always split the return or increase the nozzel size of the return if you think its too strong. I use maxijet 1200's in 10 to 20 gallons quite often so 1100 gallons in a 75 is not too much to move the water column around in most applications like you are planning.

It will simply be a return, not pumping through anything. My skimmer is separate and I don't think it'll every be running through anything else. My main concern is whether the drains can handle it. Jim what else is your pump running through? My sump is going to be pretty small.

Just a scwd , I dont run a sump,,, and to tell you the truth, Im seriously considering upping to a Mag 18/24 with a ball valve.

Wow well I guess I'll keep it. Appreciate the help everybody. Got the temp tank set up tonight so before too long I'll get this tank moved.

Mag 12 is definitely not too powerful; in fact, you'll end up adding more flow eventually, I'd be willing to bet.

and to provide that flow, you can always buy a Iwaki MD 70 RLT from me! lol
