Here is a short article that answers your question about where to reduce the pipe size:
    http://www.dolphinpumps.com/plumbing.htm.

I don't remember where, but somewhere else I read that it's best to increase the size of the pipe by 1 size at the outlet, then reduce it back again at the last point you can.

And yet another article from a very scientific view:
    http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu.../featurejp.htm
    It's based on aquarium plumbing.

yea, i'm putting my nose up to it. but i let the pvc sit in water over night and the water smelled like the glue. is there a special glue being used. i just got the stuff from home depot. it's been since sunday and i can still smell the glue.

    thanks

thts too long, shouldnt smell by now. I believe, depending on the glue, that it needs to cure dry.

Are you using regular PVC cement? The most common stuff is purple, and about the consistency of water. Typically, the top has a brush on it, and you just brush it on the joint before fitting it together.

I'm wondering if you are using something different.

Or maybe you actually have a dog nose.
