    Default GRRRR... Christmas Jerks

I had pretty much the best christmas ever, with one exception.

On, I suspect, Christmas Eve, somone decided they needed my my tires more than I do, so they tried to steal them off my truck. Near as I can tell, there were two of them.

I didn't notice anything was amiss, we drove out to my wife's parents house in spring branch and spent the day there. Headed home around 9PM, around 1604 and 281 I started to hear a 'whump whump whump'. I thought, crap, flat tire, so I got out and checked, but everthing was fine, so I continued home. Got out at home, checked, nothing... oh well, I am tired. Off to bed.

This morning we were supposed to be at my parents place at 10:00, and I slept in till 9:45, so I didn't stop to check things in daylight. But I heard the noise again about 5 miles from my parents place north of boerne, so I pulled over, and checked again... and what to my wondering christmassy eyes should appear? Right front tire, 2 lugs and their nuts are GONE, sheared right off, another lug is missing, one is on nice and tight, and one is loose, and obviously very damaged. At this point I am just a little ****ed.

I robbed a nut from the drivers side tire and put it on the empty lug on the passenger side, tightened up the others, the one was a bear to get tight. And finished getting out to my parents house very very slowly.

Anyhow, we went out, had a nice day after christmas christmas and my dad and I went to pull off the wheel and inspect the damage to the hub, which thankfully appears fine. In the process of taking the wheel off, I twiested the bad lug right off the hub, so down to two bolts. We were scratching our heads trying to figure out what happened, we had done the last break job ourselves, and we know (we check each other) that we got everything on nice and tight... and then we had the thought someone must have tried to steal the tires. I said if they were going to do that, surely they would have taken the spare first... and then thinking, decided to check that as well... sure enough, they made an attempt, my wheel lock is halfway drilled through. but they didn't get my tire.

We figure something spooked them... I am happy however, that I got no sleep today, am now at work on a 12 hour shift (in my dads truck) and have to go buy autozone for new lugs and nuts tomorrow morning, and drive out to my parents so my dad can have his car to go to work, then I get to spend my day tapping out the old lugs, pressing in the new ones, and generally not getting any sleep until, yes, I get to come in and do ANOTHER 12 hour shift.

    I hate jerks.

I am afraid to think what would have happened if it came off on I-10.

That happened to me once. I used up about half a dozen wheel studs and lugs, a hub, and ended up having to replace the tire wheel too!! While I was driving on a loose wheel the wobble of the wheel made the holes reem out and the lugs couldnt hold the wheel on tight enough anymore.

Im glad to hear you and your family made it safely to where yall were going though. I hate s**t heads like that. And on Christmas too. :scold:

well, I intended to take care of it all today, but didn't wake up till 3, I went to a few different autoshops, and amazingly, all had, 1 or 2 of what I needed, but not all.. lol... finally got it all though, tomorrow morning I get to start hitting my hub with a hammer.
