Mixing Saltwater can be FUN! :)

This is what happens when you have a spare pump, some excess pvc, and a little extra trime on your hands.



]This is a picture of the pump and PVC, the pump is an IWAKI MD-70RLT 1600 GPH (japanese Motor). If you notice the extra Ball valve abouve the T-joint, that is there for priming the pump. eventually that portion of the assembly will be outfitted to a hose so I can pump directly into the tank.

Just got done extending cutting and putting a return pipe extension on, I didn't cement it, because I may want to adjust the length later, up or down, depending on water level. I also cut the trash can's lid so it fits over and around the pipes to control evaporation and keep bugs out. oh, and if anyone is wondering, the cable running into the water is a 300 watt heater.

If you are going to let it mix for days or more then make sure you are not aerating the water too much (like it is in the picture). I've noticed that when the water is heavily aerated you tend to get alot more carbonate buildup. I don't know why that is??

Never heard that before, but you learn something new everyday. What I want to know is how you have a "spare" MD70RLT, close to $300 pump, laying around to mix water with. Bravo!!

LOL guys, to funny. MY budy Phil up in Austin attended the close out of pet supply company, and gave me the two iwaki's.

That setup is not permenant, but I wanted to do a little toying around with plumbing and wanted to find out how noisy the pump was before I plumbed it into the new tank. So this is all more or less an experiment, it won't be a spare pump for long. I have two, one will be the return pump, one will be on an oceans motions 4 way as a closed loop.

Richard, Thanks for the heads up, I just went outside and put a longer length of PVC in to stir the water without aeration. I thought that was a good thing when mixing water. oops!
