I put this together quick. I love high high end set ups like bang & olufsen. My B&O that I was given as a graduation present 10 years ago still blows away any setup today. But that is for music, not home theatre. For home theatre, I like the step down, the in between. Not the high end stuff and not the cheap stuff. I think you get the best band for the buck with the polk, infinity, onkyo, harmon kardon, velodyne. There is better out there, there is alot better out there but you can not go wrong with these. So I picked the best of the best of all the brands above and you would have a kick ***** setup and not break the bank.

I have a pair of Sansui speakers that need a home. They are old but sound great. I have had them in the back of my closet for a long time and they could really use a home. They could be yours real cheap...

Will probly be a while as he has had them for a couple years and neither of us are in a hurry, but if you want the schematics when he is done let me know.
OOH OOH, I would like some schematics please.

Is your friend searching out NOS parts or just quality newer parts?
I have a few links I can post if interested but with mostly quality new items- very little NOS though.
Anybody here need a Staco 10A variable transformer in perfect condition for $65?
    Thank you.

Well, with $8K, you don't want a receiver, you want seperates.
If you had to have a receiver though, I would probably suggest the top model Denon or Rotel. As for speakers, if movies are your only goal, check out the M&K THX setups but dump the M&K sub (no offense to M&K owners) and get an SVS- I have mine tuned to 16hz but could go to 12hz and lose a little spl :-D . The newest top end receivers shouldn't have much problem with 4 ohm loads but caution is still suggested. If you were to go with seperates, keep in mind that you will (should) probably spend at least $600 or more for interconnects just for your preamp to amp. You don't want to skimp on your other I/C's either. I bought some audioquest I/C's for my setup ($100 for 1meter pair) and they completely killed my highs- all I/C's have their own sound characteristics and should be purchased VERY carefully. I use all Nordost Blue Heavens on my setup now as they tend to be fairly neutral but those run around $220 a pair, which is still considered to be inexpensive. I could have obtained them cheaper online but I try to support local stores and I was able to take the AudioQuest I/C's back where I bought them, obtained a refund, and bought something that worked better for my setup- Good luck with that online. I will never forget when Wendy said "$220 a pair? What's the difference between the I/C's you just bought and these besides $120 ?" . Once I hooked them up, she immediately figured out the answer to that question.

What is the best system for movies around $8K? Wow, that's a tough one.
I will give some thought to that as I enjoy shopping with other people's money- J/K. Emo asks some very valid questions about room size and configuration which will make a huge difference.

    Back to astrongs thread now.

astrong- as Emo suggests, if you have an attachment to your old speakers, Austin Speaker Service is a very reputable repair facility that does good work from what I have heard.

It seems that *** as well as ABS are closed on Sundays, I will try tomorrow. I still have the KLH's and would prefer to fix them than replace, depending on cost, so I will give *** a call tomorrow.

    Just an update...

My old speakers can't be fixed because the parts are no longer available for them. So I went next door to A&B TV and spoke to Elmo, he was pretty helpful. One of the owners shops in my store and they were quite friendly, I will continue my search on my next day off, they seem so far and infrequent these days...

aaron, if you just want an idea whats out there see if you can pick up a copy of Stereophile's 'Recommended Components' issue. Doesn't necessarily have to be the latest - to give you an idea of whats out there - they match them for performance and price. I sold high end audio for a few years and to be honest am out of touch with whats 'good' now but can put you in touch with some people I used to work with that specialize in vintage gear (McIntosh, Quad, etc) and could find a good match.

Most of the stuff in chain stores is going to be pretty nasty sounding IMO - you might check some of the smaller audio specialty stores here in Austin - Circle Stereo has some decent used speakers occasionally if they are still in business you might want to check them out.

I have always used M&K speakers and like them a lot. I have a pair of Infinity speakers I am not using. They have been very lightly used. They are the big floor speakers.
