Hole Suggestions

I will be having my 180 drilled this week for my calfo (2holes) and 1 closed loop. Should I get it drilled for a second closed loop incase? If I choose not to use the second hole at this time I could just use a pvc plug.

Pete, I would definately get the hole for the second closed loop drilled - it simply gives you options down the road - and if anything, we reefers need options :-D

IMO a few advantages of two or more closed loops are:
- Variable turn over runing 0, 1, or 2 loops
- Less plumbing running the length of the tank
- Better random/wave action with two loops, each with independent switching (SCWD, etc.)
- Inlets to loops at opposite ends gives better water flow

I wouldn't drill extra holes personally. It increases the chance of them breaking your tank uneccessarily. And since propeller style power heads have come into fashion (which move massive volumes of water at low energy expenditure) closed loops are becoming obsolete.

Hmmm ... 2 conflicting responses. Propeller style powerheads in fashion ... for now they might be, but if you dont want them in the tank and are looking for a cleaner look ...

Also you get more options in placement with the PVC not to mention I have educators I want to try. I know they will be in the tank like a power head, but dont generate heat either.

I'd avoid drilling any extra holes, but you might want to make sure your closed loop drain hole has enough capacity to cover any amount of circulation you want; at a minimum, a 1.5" bulkhead. You could probably drain to two pumps if needed with that, or at least one biggie. Any returns can go over the tank top.

Are you going with the oceans motion? I'm in agreement with avoiding the tunze set up. To me, it's just WAY too much money for big ugly powerheads in the tank. They do save energy, though, and simplify the water movement task. But, I bet the oceans motion with a monstro closed loop pump (ampmaster/sequence) will really give your tank great flow.

Yeah, I agree with the no drill optiion. Just use the Ampmaster on the Oceans Motions and dont take a chance. That should give you plenty of flow. If not, you can always make a surge device :-D
