Thread: Max Safe Temp?

  1. #1

    Default Max Safe Temp?

My new system is cycling and I'm approaching a day when I'll move stuff over. I have a small chiller (1/4 HP) on the old system I plan to connect to the new, but I don't expect it will make a huge difference (.5 - 1 Deg maybe?). I'm adding some fans to help a little more too.

Currently, the new system runs 79-82, with an occasional spike up to 83. I can crack doors to the canopy and get it to run a little cooler.

I'll have a wide variety in the three tanks: Fish, SPSs, Leathers, shrooms, stonies, etc.)

Will the 79-82 range be OK, or do I need to work towards a target more like 78-80 before I start transfering livestock?

    Your advice is appreciated :-D

    Thanks - Steve

This would not stop me from loading it up though, I would try & keep it within two degrees constantly between 78 & 80. This I assume is going to be tough with your volume with the lights. Where are your ballast? I moved mine out of the room it helped lots. The chiller sounds like no help, the $ to run it would suck. Constantly running, Nah.

My tanks can run up to 82 without any problems. I start seeing some unhappy corals at 83 and above.

That is fine...my tank gets up to 85 about everyday, and everything is fine.

The ballasts are high in the cabinets (12" from the ceiling) with 6 muffin fans pulling air across them and out the cabinet. I was planning on setting the chiller high, say 81 or 82, just to help maintain the 2 deg swing you mentioned.

I really don't want to buy an $800-$1,200 1HP chiller if I can avoid it!

Actually, I am quite pleased with 79-82, I was expecting much worse!

I strive to keep my tank at 79 - 82 degrees, 82 being optimum. If it approaches 88, Id be concerned. If you have Xenia in there, keep an eye on them, they will close up when the temp gets too high.

Over 84 is a risk. Mushrooms will start to detach from rocks and some will die. I have been as high as 90 degrees short term with out a problem, but consistant high temps are a risk. I'd stay with the 78-80 range.

i used to run mine at 84 without problem. then our air conditioner broke. it took me a day to get it fixed and in that time the temp rose to around 88-90 i lost a colt, star polips, leather and part of my yellow colony. computer fans in my hood fixed the problem nicely, i only needed two of them to drop the temp to a consistant 79. if you live in austin you can get them at the goodwill computer store for a couple of bucks per fan, its well worth it.
