Halide retro question

I was looking at getting a pair of complete pendants but after pricing them I am considering building a canopy and installing retros...

question - Do I need to plan on putting a lens cover of some sort over the bulb to protect from salt and moisture? The top of my tank is currently open...

It depends on how far the halides are off of the tank. If you retro a double ended halide into the canopy, you will need UV blocking glass between them and your tank.

I am not planning on the DE for that very fact. How far away is far enough??
