    Default Salinity monitor

Im a new MAAST member and fairly new to the world of salt water tanks. I have a digital "PINPOINT" salinity monitor by American Marine Inc. It has a range of 00.0-200.0 mS on it. Im currently reading 40.4mS. but I dont know what this means, is this a good reading? Can someone please explain it to me. I also have a hydrometer that is currently reading 1.022.

Your monitor is reading salinity, while your hydrometer is reading specific gravity. look at this table to convert from one to another.

your salinity should be aroung 34-35 which translates to 1.025 @ 76 deg F. One of your instruments is off. Try recalibrating the monitor because it seems too high.

I double what eleyan stated, one of them is off and it sounds like your or may need calibration. I stick to the good old refractometers.

By the way, welcome to MAAST.

The monitor is a good monitor and it should be calibrated. You can get the calibration fluid for it from premium for 2 bucks. You should be reading somewhere around 51.5 which translates to 1.025. This is the chart that should have come with the unit.
