    Default bioballs

can bioballs be completely submreged and then have water go through them, from one side passing thorugh them to another side of the sump???or do they have to be in air, having water trickle down through them?

Bobby, from what I've heard they have to be in the air and water has to trickle through them.

Bobby, you are defeationg the purpose of bioballs by submerging them. The idea is to have an area of very high oxygen content so that the bacteria on the bioballs will stay at a high level of metabolism and thus eating as much waste as possible. There is about 7 ppm of oxygen in saturated seawater, there is 21% in air. That's a difference of 30,000 times the amount of oxygen available to the bacteria.

If you want to do something like what you are talking about, I'd look into live rock in the sump, or LR rubble that can be picked up fairly cheap.

yjx, great idea brewercm, i had forgot about that option, its b/c i am going to have a section of my sump empty, in the sense there wil be nothing there, and it will be completely covered with water, and i was wondergin what i could put in there for extra filtration, LR rubble will be great, thx again
