Don't worry, your aiptasia will return :-D
I never saw one explode, if you meant that literally, but it can't be good.

Joe's Juice works great when you can see and dose the anemone.

My problem is after one dies off 3-4+ little bitty aptasia show up around the base of the dead aptasia. I believe they were there all along and just living in the shadow of the big one that I was able to kill.

I think you can be successful with Joe's if you start early and stay after them for about a week. Once they take hold it is near impossible to get rid of them without a natural predator like copperband or peppermint shrimp.

I really had a prob with aiptasia...kalked it but kept coming back. Bought a peppermint shrimp and have been aiptasia free for about 6 months now. So far, the peppermint hasn't messed with any of my corals.

Be careful. There was a cleaner shrimp on the back of a rock that I Joe's Juiced and the shrimp was dead after 5 minutes. I did not connect the two events. A few days ago I zapped a few aptasia in a different tank and another cleaner shrimp was dead minutes later. These are both cleaners that have been in my tanks for over 2 years!

I have used joe's successfully(all the aiptasia were 1/2" or less), and no returnees yet (some 2 months gone). After placing a small amount on the oral disk, the anemones ate and gradually shriveled up and melted away. Timing for dissappearance variable, but most completely gone in 15 -30 minutes after application of paste. I did not observe any to explode.

Sherri, that peppermint messes with your corals when you are not around. There are some things you will never have in your reef if you have peppermints. They are very shy and eat lots of reef life besides aiptasia, including large polyp stoneys and unguarded anemones. If you lost a BTA and have a peppermint, they are not compatable.

There are pros and cons to most methods, re: copperbands, peppermints, joes juice and berghia nudibranches. Berghia cause no trouble, eat nothing else and they don't kill shrimp. And copperbands - I've only seen them attack something that is dead or dying from some trauma it had otherwise, except for the things they are known to eat inlcuding astrea turbo snails and feather dusters.

Misti, thanks for pointing that out. Didn't know Joes Juice would kill cleaner shrimp. Maybe coral crabs too then?

Larry...great info. My peppermint is shy but does come out when I feed him Formula One pellets. He loves them. So hopefully for the time being I will keep him fat & happy. I'm prob gonna try & trap him & put him in my Q tank till I find someone that wants one. He is a good size one, but he's done his job. Been following your posts on the berghia's - does sound like a better & safer way to exterminate aiptasia. Thanks again for the info.
