Planted Marine Tank: Attention MikeP!

hey all,

i thought id ask the group for some feedback/advice concerning a marine planted tank. i know mike had thought about starting one, were u ever successful at it? i also wanted to know about any added nutrients, i know freshwater tanks have some green liquid for their plants, anything like that for marine i should look into?

my plan is a gradual one, im gonna start by making a dsb 2.5 gallon with 13 watt pc light over it(might also look into the red bulb for freshwater see if it helps) once they get good growth i would like to upgrade to a custom long tank that i have in my mind for design.

im also in the market for any rare caulerpas and other marine plants, im gonna be willing to pay $$$ or trade for sure! im really wanting to do this and jump on the macroalgae tank genre bandwagon, im with those guys who think its the next step for marine tanks. some of these plants are just fantastic!!!

So what you are looking for is liquid fertilizer right. Dunno, but I bet Kent or Seachem make what you are looking for. You might wanna check there.

yeah precisely! i totally have forgotten the name of the stuff i used to use in my freshwater planted tank but im tellin u, between just lights and using that stuff on top of lights those plants shot off like rockets! they grew so fast it was rather difficult at times to keep up!

ps im really interested in some of the red algaes or if anyone has any mermaid's wineglass(acetabularia) that would be totally awesome too!!!

Steve, I've tried it on one or two occasions. Kind of hard to do plumbed in with my reef - one or two species seem to end up dominating. I still have turtle grass in my 60 gallon cube along with some C.prolifera. The requirements for all the different macro algaes are not super well known - I also had a TON of halimeda that I removed last month and threw in with my mantis - calcerous algaes have needs similar to some stony corals albeit on a smaller scale.

Look at pictures on reefcental of a user named 'plantbrain' he had a really cool saltwater planted tank - I think he's a plant biologist.
