    Default Router Problems

I have a SMC 7004BR Router. Until recently it worked fine, then one day it worked fine in the am and in the afternoon it quit. I can access the router on the local ip but I can'tget on the internet. I can connect the computer straight to the cable modem and it works fine. I reset the router reloaded the firmware, but nothing.
Is there anybody here that can help me please?

I've seen 3 fail like this. Buy a new one or warranty claim on it.

Are you running DHCP? If so, check the computers behind the router to make sure they are getting the proper IP from the router. Also, if there is a setting for remote upgrade/management set it to active and try to log on to the router from an outside computer. That will verify the uplink to your cable modem. My router flakes out sometimes when the power goes out and changes some setting for the DHCP, and it stops assigning number, caused quite a few headaches till I found out what was happening.....

I've had the same problems as Greg. I've gone through 3 7004VWBR's. They need a cooling fan of some sort in the unit. From what I've seen they overheat and just stop working. In all 3 of mine, the WAN connectivity has gone out. My last one decided to just stop working all together. Most SMC products have a lifetime warranty. Lifetime is defined as the Life the product is currently sold and supported. If it shows as being supported on the website they will replace it for free. If it's out of warranty I would buy a different one and a different brand. SMC's quality has really gone down in the last 2-3 years.

Kai, Silly question, but, did you turn it off for a while, then back on and try all that stuff? Not just a reset, but unplugged? A partial crash from a slight power dip will mess them up good. They have to go all the way down, then come all the way back up.
