Absolutely a skimmer is a good idea for a nano reef. I ran a prizm on my 10 gal for more than a year and I was happy with it. They're cheaply made, but cheap to buy so there you have it.
I never used a skimmer on anything under 20g, hell even 35 and under lol. A simple AquaClear was enough for me.
Why not try without and see how you like it, then if you are not satisfied you can always add one later?![]()
Get a hang on fuge.

When I had my 10gal nano I made a small hangon fuge with internal skim-box. Better than skimmer for such a small tank. That little fuge coupled with regular water changes made for a healthy and happy tank.

On my 10 I had a refugium and a skimmer; and an auto top off system. That was a cool little tank, in fact, I think I'll set it up again to breed berghia nudibranchs. The advice about the refugium is good; actually, something like a 40 gallon refugium would be perfect! I still think a skimmer is a good thing for such a little tank, though. Keeps O2 and ph steady, and it's real easy to overfeed a nano.
I agree with Matt on the skimmer helping with the ph and especially the O2 part.
