    Default my refugium modification

    hey all!
just figured i would show some modifications i made to the acrylic sump i purchased from austin aquariums a few months ago. i started off drilling a 1½" hole in the bottom to fit a bulkhead fitting. and finished off by measuring and drilling a 2¾" hole, the same inner diameter of the 3" pipe i was using.

after drilling the holes, i cut 1~ 14½" length of arcylic pipe to be glue in place around the bulkhead fitting on the bottom. this will prevent draining of the refugium if the pump looses power. then i cut a few more pieces of acrylic 3" pipe to make the return pipe to the tank.

by cutting out a small section of the acrylic pipe approx. ¾", this will be used as a feedthru shaft for the return pipe to be cemented to for extra strength.
after finishing the cuts, it was time for a dry fit. thankfully, everything assembled up just right the first time. using a small pane of glass i tacked down some 100grit sandpaper using stickglue. this gave me a flat plane to sand against to removed the rough cut of the miter saw.

using weldon#16, i cemented everything together. this stuff doesn't require liberal use, just enough can be too much! first i cemented into place the long supply overflow, followed by the return spout.

i gave a few hours to dry and then plumbed it up, using a rio 1400 as a supply pump. i am considering making it the main return from the sump, and use the tank supply line as a secondary overflow to the sump. currently there is a 65w 10k pc smartlight lighting up my empty refugium

so all thats left for me to do is to fill the refugium with some good macro algea!

Looks great! Next time I would suggest using weldon #40 instead of #16. It's much stronger, especially for any joints that must withstand some water pressure.
    Nice idea.
