Thread: Can't catch that @*!% dottyback!

Anybody know any tricks for catching a smallish fish who likes to hide in the rocks? I'm wondering if there's a trap or anything I can use.

I think I'm stressing out my other fish with that net hovering around.

I've used food as bait in a clear plastic box that I can put up against favorite hiding place/rock. Hopefully when it comes to feed you can bring up the container with sly, sneeky fish in it. Another method is a baited fish line. can't believe I said that.

There are fish traps that you can buy at your LFS. These are clear acrylic tubes with a bait box at one end and a guillotine style door on the other end that you thread with fishing line. You sit away from the tank with the baited trap out in the open in the tank. When the fish swims in to get his favorite food, you just release the fishing line and the guillotine door falls into place trapping the offending fish for easy removal.

They are relatively expensive, but they are worht not having to rip your tank apart to catch the nuiscance.

You could use my method , pull out the rock!

I had to buy a piece of live rock to get my dottyback. 'Sid', the psuedochromis, is a pretty cool fish but can get a little mean.

Good luck. Tell us what works.

Do you care if it lives or dies? I have a way to catch it, if your answer is for the latter of the two choices. Acrylic tubing....treble hook.....fast reflexes.....a beer(of your choice).....and a waiting toilet bowl. It worked for me in removing a rusty angelfish with a voracious appetite for sps.
