If you're not using halide or VHO, xenia should usually be placed in the upper reaches (top third, to quarter of tank, should suffice). They seem to prefer fairly intense lighting, one of mine moved towards the surface on rock(from mid tank level - my tank is 17 inches deep), and another almost "melted" before I discovered it, moving it up, and is making a comback.
