Sherri, if you have maxijet type powerheads just get a sponge cover for them, many store will have something that will fit. The worst for softbodied critters are Aquaclears - these things move a ton of water but in doign so can shred stuff in a heartbeat. Make sure you cover the grilles of your overflow too if you can, maybe some eggcrate covered with window screen would work.
Glad everyone is doing well with their critters - my chalk bass are cooler than cool!, I'll post pics once I get things organized.
