I can can enough good things about my Euro-Reef skimmer.
I used no other filtration except DSD/LR/refugium.
I have 4 large fish in my SPS dedicated 180...No problem.

Many tout the virtues of skimmer-less...However...skimmers have worked for me for years.

I have used CPR BakPaks for a long time now and I think they are a great skimmer for smaller tanks. You have to option to put some bio filtration in it if you want or just use it as a skimmer. The only problem is that you do have to clean out the venturi and that is a minor pain and for some reason the stupid Rio pump doesn't want to come back on sometimes. My next skimmer will be the AquaC Remora.

I've been using an urchin on my 45 for about a year. Definitely get the maxijet upgrade; it works way better. In fact, I'd think about an urchin pro with the mag 3. I borrowed an EV120 for a while, and it pulled way more junk than the urchin on the same system, and my tank looked better. (it's pretty heavily stocked with sps) So the urchin pro would probably do better in the long run, because you can run it with a better pump. Just my 2 cents.

I pulled out my my bioballs and all mechanical filtration from my wet dry filter about 3 weeks ago. Not only have I not had any problems with ammonia/nitrite but my ORP has gone from around 260 - 270mv to 380 - 390mv. Right now it's reading 393mv and is still increasing daily. I've also noticed a big reduction in algae growth. So I recommend doing it. I am using an AquaC EV120 in my sump and no other form of filtration other than lots of live rock.
