New Tank
Hello All,
Looking for some advice.
This is my first post here. I am getting ready to set up a new 65g breeder to be a FOWLR to begin with.
Have read many posts about South Down sand, but don't yet understand what is special about it? How does it differ from the Play Sand at Lowe's? What about sand from the Gulf?
For filtration, I'm thinking of using an Emperor 400 along with a powerhead w/bio filter to stir things up, sand and/or crushed coral plus Live Rock.
Any thoughts or advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Ed

Hello ed
Ed have you ever had a salt tank before?? the larger the tank the better and as far as SD sand its the same sand you will find in your LFS at about 1/2 to 1/3 the cost.
Im just getting started back into salt again after about 10 years and allot
has changed.. If your going to set up a reef tank i would suggest a sump
with a protien skimmer if your pocketbook will let you .
im setting up a 110 show tank and is taking me awhile to get everything i need for it , its taken me about 1 month to get the tank and i built the stand myself. Saving me lots of money... :P
i cant afford to do it all at once and doing your homework will save you money in the long run .
I made a sump out of a 20 gal long tank and it only cost me about 45.00
as oposed to the 250 or 300 they (lfs) charge for them.
itll probably take me 3 or 4 months to set mine up but the education im getting from all the kind ppl from MAAST and Reef Centeral i think will
make all the difference in my tank.
Also i wouldnt use sand from the beach itll probably have contamination in it and regular sand dosent give you the benifits of aragonite.
Hope i have helped ...
