Thread: My year is starting out good! :-)

Default My year is starting out good! :-)

Sorry to brag... but I just got an email from the reefland site administrator saying I won the grand prize for the treasure hunt contest that took place and ended a few weeks ago.

I'm getting a brand new 1.5HP Dolphin pump from one of their sponsors Aquatic Eco Systems... i'm not sure what model it is yet but I guess i'll find out soon when it arrives.

For anyone else who hasn't visited either of these sites... www.reefland.com is a fairly active forum (no where near close to RC of course) but it's not bad and has a lot nicer crowd.

www.aquaticeco.com has TON's of cool stuff! Go to their site and request a free catalog. You'd be surprised with how much stuff they have. I've ordered from them once before and didn't have any problems.

Are you sure about the HP? These are the pumps running that much HP. 5,000-10,000gph. That should blow everything out of your tank, including the water. It would make for a good aquaculture pump though on about 1,000 gallon set up of high flow acropora! By the way these pumps are designed to pump huge amounts of water from the basement..... :-D  depending on which one your getting they run from $400-$650 wholesale. $800-$1500 retail.

There are four high speed pumps in the HHS line. They are the HHS 5000, 5900, 8250, and 9400. These HHS pumps are great for applications where the pump is in the basement and the system is on another floor. The HHS 5000 or 5900 are the most popular for this use. The motors are 1/2, 1, 2, and 3 horse power respectively. The HHS 5000, and 5900 have dual voltage energy plus motors. They are one of the most efficient 56 frame motors available. The HHS 8250 and 9400 are 230 Volt units. The smallest high speed HHS pump is the 5000. This model has a heavy duty 1/2 horse power, 56 frame motor with a high service factor. The motor draws 6.3 - 7.0 amps at 115 Volts. This pump is excellent for driving today's high pressure accessories like extra large protein skimmers, ultra violet sterilizers, sand filters, and canister filters. The largest pump in the HHS line is the 9400. The HHS 9400 is a three horse power titan that flows over 150+ gallons per minute at 1' of head and reaches a maximum head pressure of over 100 head feet. The HHS 9400 is presently Dolphin's most powerful pump and can operate enormous ponds, aquaculture systems with huge raceways, or an entire bank of aquariums. For curve data on the high speed line of HHS pumps see: HHS High rpm Curves

Yeesh! That's a ton of water movement. They already deleted the post that mentioned the prizes a few weeks ago so I forget which actual model the pump was. Here's what the email said though...

As the winner, you will receive a 1.5HP Dolphin pump directly from Aquatic Eco Systems
It COULD actually have been a 1.5AMP pump perhaps(the AmpMaster 3K is rated up to that) but not sure.

here's the links to AquaticEco's Dolphin pumps. I was planning on buying a 2nd pump anyways to have as backup just in case my AM3K ever died on me.

I think i'll email them back to find out which model the pump was.

    Here's the pump

Definately a monster pump! 3450 RPM - 10.6 avg amps, this thing practically needs it's own dedicated circuit!

Good pump, about 5800gph, but higher operating cost than the 3000. Considerably higher.

    Thanks Misti. ;)

From what I can find on this pump(if i'm correct, aquatic eco doesn't list the actual model so it's one of two)... this pump is wayyyy overkill.

The Super Aqua Sea 6850 is a 3450 rpm unit with heavy duty motors. This pump is for applications requiring medium head pressures and high flow rates. It flows between 2000 and 8700 g.p.h. at pressures up to eighteen psi. High speed Super Aqua Sea pumps work best between 14 and 40 head feet. These pumps have a 2" inlet and outlet wet end.
At 0' head pressure, this puppy pushes 114GPM!
At 13' head pressure, this puppy pushes 90 GPM!
At 30' head pressure, this puppy pushes 50 GPM!

To make a comparion... My AmpMaster 3000:
At '0 head pressure will push 60GPM
At 13' head pressure will push 20GPM
And anything past 18' it won't even be able to push water up that high

So considering the actual head pressure of my tank will only be 5' give or take an extra foot or two for corners, my AM3K would be pushing somewhere between 45-50GPM

This new pump on the same setup would be pushing around 105GPM!

    :o

I think I may have to try and trade it away for a smaller pump.

Even if it is too big for your uses, it is still nice to start the year off by winning something!

You could always post it for sale on one of the other sites (sounds too big for us) and make $$$$$!
