    Default expanded clay aggregate

Is expanded clay aggregate safe for marine aquariums? I use it in my freshwater filters as a bio media and it far surpasses any manufactured media I've tried.

I want to build a aquaponics style filter with expanded clay aggregate and some mangroves. It is my understanding that mangroves are more effective nitrate removers if given a substrate to root in. The advantage of an aquaponics style filter is that the water is actively passed through the roots of the mangrove which helps it remove more nutrients from the water column. Also, having a substrate to anchor in allows the mangrove to grow larger and thereby grow a more extensive root system.

    Pros:
Water is actively passed through the roots
    Better plant growth
Tons of bio media for bacteria
Bio media isexposed to more oxygen
    Tank gets higher O2 sats

    Cons:
Needs to be cleaned approx every 2 years, cleaning is very time consuming
