I believe Rob is correct. My lyretails did the same thing. The dominant female actually took out the male and starting her morph into a male. She also took out a much smaller then her for good measure. In hindsight, it seems better to make sure the male is the largest of the school while ensuring the females are about the same size so the fighting doesn't lead to death.
